Beach House Sign Stories
Most people driving down Surf City, Topsail Island, the Outer Banks, Mrytle Beach, or other beaches on the Carolina coast in are always curious about how people name or design that special eye catching house sign and if there is a story behind it, then that's part of the fun of designing a beach house sign from your own unique ideas - the story behind it all. Think about how many times you will entertain friends or family, and as they enter your home, someone utters; "How did you come up with that sign in the front of your house?" Followed with a pride filled statement, "Oh, we designed that." And the story begins.
After seeing all of the beach house signs in our gallery or the house signs featured through out the pages on this site I am looking forward to hearing the stories. So, below are a few unique beach house signs and the personal ideas came to life, as well as how they came up with the name. Enjoy!
Two couples from NY owned a duplex on the beach and wanted a sign that would combine their occupations with the railroad and a beach theme. They suggested using a turtle for the engineer, and provided me with rough sketches. When the curved track evolved in the design, the piece really worked. Multiple cut-outs were done on this sign.
This farm family explained to me about the distinctive tan acquired by working in the outside sun. After many sketches, I came upon the idea of using farm tools instead of palm trees for the hammock (and I put a tooth-pick in the farmer's mouth as that was a trademark of this customer s personality)
This couple wanted their respective occupations made into a beach scene. She s a schoolteacher and he is a heavy equipment operator (his exact equipment is portrayed) they re both DOZIN IN THE SUN!
This sign is an homage to the extended life (SECOND WIND) of the customers wife, who survived for another 11 years after a lung transplant. He wanted to make the analogy with the Loggerhead turtles plight to survive after hatching. The turtles are a big item here on the island. *NOTE* On this sign the cut-out moon is painted iridescent and the varying size turtles are cut from various thicknesses of wood for an added effect.
